shot of the day ~ Orca surfacing to breath
Timing shots with whales and especially orca is not an easy thing most times. The reason for this is that they are only at the surface for about 5 seconds in total and personally I like getting the shot at the moment they exhale, which takes about a second. In order to take that shot then you need to have a good idea of where and when this animal is going to surface and be ready to take that shot in an instant.
This is actually a young male from L pod, which is apart of the Southern Resident Orca population in the Pacific North West. This population of orca are salmon eaters and they specifically hunt for Chinook salmon, which isn't doing too well right now from a population stand point. As a result the orca population is not doing well either and their current numbers are at 76 individual animals, which makes them endangered.

Very sad that so many beautiful animals are becoming endangered 😭 im a born native Hawaiian and lived on Maui all my life up until last year, and over 90% of the native animals in Hawaii are endangered. Mostly because of human greed. We as humans need to really open our eyes and stop doing these things that put the ecosystem at this horrible state. If we dont fix this our very own existing will stop as well. Its the great circle of life. We all need each other🌸
