Mole Snake vs Cape Cobra

in #nature8 years ago

Walking my dog earlier this week I came across this fellow. It had obviously been caught out in the cold and was extremely sluggish when I moved it to a warmer spot (unfortunately it did not survive as I found it lying dead the following morning

The mole snake (Scientific name: Pseudaspis cana) resembles a Cape Cobra but unlike the Cobra it does not have poisonous venom.

The Cape Cobra on the other hand is aggressive and poisonous

The Cape cobra (Naja nivea), also called the yellow cobra, is a moderate-sized, highly venomous species of cobra inhabiting a wide variety of biomes across southern Africa including arid savanna, fynbos, bushveld, desert and semi-desert regions

It is helpful to know how to tell these apart as it will save the lives of some mole snakes who are handy around your garden, eating rats and moles and keeping other snakes away. So take 10 minutes to watch the following video!!
