Chinese water Deer in Bristol

in #nature6 years ago

I'm an avid nature lover and animal tracker. I live a mile outside of the city centre, by an ancient brook.
I was amazed at the range of animals in my area when i moved here. The forrest, what's left of it, has badgers, weasels, owls, foxes, deer and countless birds.
The brook has otter and kingfishers that live on it amongst other things.

I have been seeing more of the deer lately as they some down from the wooded hills for the rut and to mate. They use the brook as it's the only source of fresh water. For the last couple of weeks i have been seeing strange tracks. They are deer tracks but not the track of the native deer. So i started to follow them in an effort to identify what they are.One day last week i saw an animal in a copse. i was alerted by the warnings of jay and magpie, i saw it at quite a distance and from that far and with weak eye's i thought i was looking at some kind of cat, like a serval or linx!! As i approached it turned and ran and it was then that i knew t was a deer.

Today i managed to track them and watch them for a couple of minutes. There are a pair of Chinese water deer! Quite different to the native deer that live around here. They aren't native to the UK so must have been freed or escaped from someones collection the pictures i have posted are pictures from the internet as i identified it. The ears and face at a distance looked like a large cat.
I'm going to attempt over the summer to picture and record as much of the beautiful nature around my area of the city. Like i mentioned above, we have otter, kingfisher, weasels, owls, badgers and money other lovely creatures. I am going to record it in a weekly blog with pictures and video's. it's amazing what we have around us when you get off the track and really look around.
thanks for looking in and i hope you follow my weekly nature blog. You will be amazed like i was , at what live alongside us in the city..

Very cool. Looks like a cross between a deer and a walrus. 😁

yeah, they are strange. I've read up about them and they were introduced to UK 100 years ago. They are the rarest deer in UK apparently. I thought it was a cat like a linx at first. it was watching me with the big hyena ears pricked..strange aint they??
Thanks for looking bro..

That’s cool that you got to see them. Thanks for sharing.
