LOOK What we Caught in our Strawberry Patch!

No it was not a cute little white bunny!

Last week some varmint killed some of our baby layer chicks.

Nope it wasn't Bugs Bunny Either!

Then we saw that pesky rascal was trying to dig under our chicken coop to get to the adult chickens. So we put a capture cage next to the coop with cat food in it. And in the morning we had caught our neighbor's cat!!

At the same time we noticed some critter was noshing on our strawberries in the strawberry patch. So we moved the capture cage next to the patch.

And this morning we finally got the true villain!

She looks so sweet and innocent doesn't she! Notice all the digging around the cage she had done before getting captured.

She will be relocated and our ranch will be safe and sound again.

Crazy! I never knew skunks would prey on chickens, or anything close to that big. Fascinating stuff and of course, heartbreaking too. Good for you; releasing is the way to keep harmony in nature, to establish balance. We house sat for an ex-pat couple in Bali with 35 chickens and the locals and some ex-pats would just kill cobras and pythons when they attacked the chooks. I do understand the cobras on one level since they are deadly but they are just doing what nature teaches them to do, and more snake catching specialists are available these days. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your awesome comment. We thought it might have been a weasel because their heads were decapitated which they are known to do. But now we know skunks do a similar method. Very cool that you got to house-sit in Bali with chickens!
