Fish-dragon
Today I want to talk about an unusual fish called the silver arawana, or fish-dragon, water monkey fish-monkey.
she Lives in South America, usually in large rivers and their tributaries. Different from other freshwater fish large, extensive mesh of the circulatory system. Blood vessels are even in the walls of the swim bladder, so the fish can breathe the dissolved oxygen levels, and can freely jump out of the water and look for prey.
Hobbyists became acquainted with this fish more than 100 years ago, and the first introduced species was the silver arawana. This fish gives us a chance to glimpse into the past. Aquarium Aravan is one of the few fish that look now like in the Jurassic period.
Its scientific name comes from the Greek word "osteoglossum", which translates as bone language, and "bicirrhosum" — a pair of antennae.
One of the most interesting characteristics of this fish is its mouth. It opens in three parts and is somewhat similar to the loading barge that indicates its predatory nature and ravenous appetite. But the two "whiskers-pin" on the tip of the lower jaw is a touch device, which aravana is able to perceive and capture prey on the water surface even in complete darkness.
This fish has excellent vision, can see above the surface, to detect their prey and jump out from water, so people called her fish-monkey, water monkey.
