Photo collection - Pine male pollen cones

Whether you notice or not, Pines are busy producing many pollen cones each spring.

If you hit this with a stick, you would undoubtedly see a cloud of yellow dust. The pine tree usually pollenates itself and other pine trees on a windy day. Sometimes they can be so numerous that it blankets the ground in a golden hue. It might as well be, the pine pollen is high in protein and will serve to fertilize the forest floor and help the growth of future plants.
