Earth Mystery #1 : Mid Atlantic Ridge
The Mid Atlantic ridge is divergent tectonic plate(i.e exist between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other) located along the floor of Atlantic ocean. In the North Atlantic it separates the Eurasian and North American plates and in the South Atlantic it separates the African and South American plates. Its average spreading rate is about 2.5 cm per year.
The Mid-Atlantic ridge is an example of mid-oceanic ridge and the longest mountain range which is all underwater except for some short stretches like Iceland. Iceland is one place where a mid - oceanic ridge can be seen on the ground as well as in shallow water.
In Iceland the Mid-Atlantic Ridge passes across the Þingvellir National Park, a popular destination for tourists
