Do you know in what region it is considered sacred? And what do mangoes have to do with nuts? I tell you these and other curious facts about the king of fruits.

It is a sacred tree for Buddhists.

The Buddhists consider that the tree that produces this delicious fruit is sacred, in the region of India.

Legend has it that Buddha's favorite place to meditate and teach his disciples was under a mango grove, a place full of peace.

Its closest relatives are nuts.

Incredibly the closest relatives of mango are no other fleshy fruits are nuts, pistachios and olives. The mango is a drupe, that is, a fleshy fruit with a thin skin with a hard center called the endocarp that protects the seed. - - -

It is the national fruit in three countries.

India, Pakistan and the Philippines have given mango this great distinction, also in Bangladesh also granted a special title: the national tree.

There are hundreds (perhaps thousands) of varieties of this fruit.

Many of these varieties never reach the supermarkets, even so in New Delhi, in India, during the summer the Mango Festival is celebrated.

In this great festival, which has been held for a decade, you can taste more than 500 varieties of this fruit.

Free of pesticides.

Mango is one of the least polluting fruits today. The use of pesticides in agriculture grows exponentially but with this fruit its use is not necessary, so do not be fooled by the labels of much more expensive organic mangoes, the mango where it is grown will not need the use of pesticides.

46 million tons produced in the world.

In fact, lots of mangoes are lost during the months of May to July due to over production, lack of manpower and especially because markets are overcrowded.

The guinness record of the largest mango is 3.5 kilos.

The giant specimen was harvested in the Philippines, was presented in 2009 and had a size of 30.5 cm long by 17.80 cm wide and had a circumference of 49.5 cm.

The oldest tree is 300 years old.

This tree is still standing on the eastern side of Kandesh, in central India and is still bearing fruit.
