Coprolite - a really shit gift.
A coprolite is fossilized feces. Coprolites are classified as trace fossils. Trace fossils are important to palaeontology as they show us the behaviour of an animal, in the case of coprolites, we are shown their diet. Most coprolites are composed chiefly of calcium phosphate, along with minor quantities of organic matter.
I stumbled upon (not literally!) coprolites last Christmas when my wife brought me one as a gift, I had no clue what it was and she kept me guessing up to the point where I was about to lick it. It was a really shit gift but I loved it and I still have it in the trophy cupboard! Here is a photo.
Its rock hard due to fossilisation and doesn't stink! It does look like it was a bit rough on the way out! That dinosaur needed more fibre in its diet for sure!

Here is a coprolite that has been cut and polished into a sphere.
Some people like to cut and polish them and make them into jewellery. I reckon I have found a Christmas pressie for the wife this year!
Some people don't even bother cutting and polishing them!
So I reckon right about now you are saying to yourself, "Where can I get me one of these beauties?" A quick google will find plenty of sellers, dinosaurs were around awhile and took dumps everywhere so coprolites aren't exactly rare. Here are some I have found on eBay which are relatively affordable. Want to get someone a really shit gift? Look no further!
