Closest Picture Ever of Jupiter's Great Red Spot

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

On Monday the Juno spacecraft completed its flyby of Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Juno came within 5600 miles of the massive storm which measures more than 10,000 miles across.
The Great Red Spot has been continuously observed for 187 years, since 1830. And it may be even older than 350 years. A giant storm on Jupiter was first observed in 1665 by Giovanni Cassini. This could have been a different storm that has since dissipated and reformed or possibly the same storm as the one today has been in existence all this time.
