This has been the headlines today in Reunion Island, as for the 3rd time this year, the Peak Of Furnace is on eruption! Just a gentle reminder, Reunion is an Island dependent of France and the 14th of July is the Bastille Day!

For several days there has been a sustained seismic activity in the region which eventually triggered the Peak Of Furnace to erupt again this year! This is the 3rd time in 2017!

The seismic crisis started on 13 July 2017 at around 22 p.m. local time and the eruption tremor appeared around 00 h50 on 14 July 2017!!!

Peak Of Furnace is a shield volcano on the eastern side of Réunion island which is actually just near of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean!

Currently it is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, along with Kīlauea in the Hawaiian Islands (Pacific Ocean), Stromboli, Etna (Italy) and Mount Erebus in Antarctica.

The volcano is located within Réunion National Park, a World Heritage site.

Named Piton de la Fournaise in French, it is a major tourist attraction on Réunion island.

Fluid basaltic lava is flown out with fire fountaining at the vent during eruptions. This volcano has more than 150 recorded eruptions since the 17th century. Amazing indeed!

The eruptions of Peak Of Furnace is within the caldera, hence do not cause much devastation, because the caldera is uninhabited!

This is lava flowing down!

This lava eventually on many occasion reaches the sea with spectacular results! It is worth noting that for months after an eruption, the core of the lava flows can still be hot enough to steam in rainy weather. Just imagine that temperature!

Here is when lava meets the sea! Simply spectacular!

An erupting volcano is dangerous and scary, but it is absolutely magnificent to look at, like the one in your video. Great pictures too. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for you checking the post dear! Yes it can be very dangerous but the one in Reunion Island is actually a tourist attraction, so many people travel there to watch this show! This year it has already erupted for the 3rd time!

Wow! That looks amazing.

Really it is very amazing to see!
You do have a couple of volcanoes in Norway too, I recall the Beerenberg which is dormant i believe.

I have never seen a volcano up close but I think I would be fascinated by watching lava flow. I love the glow of fire. I wonder what it sounds like as it moves?

We do have a couple of volcanoes in Mauritius but all dormant, we have never seen them erupting! To see it live, got to go to Reunion island which is 30 Minutes flight from Mauritius!

Crazy! I didn't realize this was what Bastille Day was all about. When I was in New York awhile back they had fireworks on the Hudson for Bastille day !

Starting to make sense now lol.

Hahaha! It was a pure coincidence that the volcano started to erupt on the 14 of July dear! It does resemble fireworks though!
Have you ever seen it live?
Thanks for checking it out dear!

Pretty sweet chef, I've always been fascinated by volcanos and lava. Thanks for sharing!
