Amazing nature #3, we ought to help maintain the balance of nature in ponds, streams and rivers.

I am quite delighted today in sharing and increasing awareness on the conservation of nature. Ideally, all things play a role in our various ecosystems and for life to be smooth, a balance is needed.

For many different animals to survive in a pond, river or stream, it is abundantly clear that some sort of balance must be reached, whereby the big and ferocious ones such as water beetles, dragonfly larvae, giant water-bugs, fish etc get
enough to eat to maintain a certain number of them while the lesser ones must be in sufficient number to provide this food.

As such a surplus of them has to survive in order to keep up the numbers by breeding new generations.
Some kinds maybe absent for example if many fish are present there will be a few mosquito larvae. There must also be enough of the small organisms, plants and animals to keep the smaller animals supplied.

The numbers present however depend much on the food supply and the rate at which breeding takes place. The water conditions may suit some types better than others, according to whether it is flowing, cool and shady; whether there is plenty of shelter by stones, or plants, whether deep or shallow, with a sandy or muddy bottom.
Flooding in the rains or drying up in a drought may thus alter any of these conditions. Each of them will have its own features and no two maybe alike.

Each will thus contain a different environment for water animals and plants and those present may consist of a different selection of animals with different proportions of each. An alteration in any of the conditions will alter the balance set up between living things and the total effect of the surroundings.

However, the alteration of this balance is been witnessed with the continuous pollution of of these areas with plastic papers, bottles, tires, dumping of domestic waste etc. This has greatly caused severe loss on aquatic life, contributing greatly to flooding, stagnant water that serves as breeding ground for mosquitoes etc.

Therefore we need to stop the pollution of these bodies as a permanent balance may never be set up if the conditions are always changing and unlike the ponds, rivers and streams we need to take the same action or approach on our environment. Let us always strive at striking a balance in our ecosystems so that they should always be in their natural state.
