Tree Tuesday: the majestic Ficus Macrophylla
Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!
Today, I am happy to submit another entry for the popular challenge #TreeTuesday hosted by @old-guy-photos.
This time around, I will show you what is one of the most extraordinary and impressive trees I have ever seen in my life - the majestic Ficus Macrophylla, commonly known as the Australian Banyan or the Moreton Bay Fig.
These remarkable trees can reach up to staggering 60 m (200 ft) in height but there is another thing that they are most famous for. Yes, it those crazy aerial buttress roots!
The tree drops the roots from its branches and once they reach the ground, they start to thicken, gradually transforming into a kind of supplementary trunks. This unique ability allows the tree to spread over vast areas.
Ficus Macrophylla used to be native to the eastern coast of Australia but these days, it can be found in tropical and subtropical regions all over the world. It is often planted in large public parks as its unique, expansive root system requires a lot of space.
I took the above featured photos in a botanical garden in Puerto de la Cruz on the Canary island of Tenerife, Spain.
Do you also have photos of some unusual or interesting trees? Feel free to share them with us! I would love to see them :)
Incredible tree. It also has the potential to live forever, as the core trunk dies, the new ones can carry on.
This is exactly what I was thinking about when writing this post. And I think science has not even realized it yet as the only "immortal" organism described by it is, as far as I know, the immortal jellyfish.
i Love that tree, banyans are so amazing. .i think there is one in India that is 156,000 square feet.. try hugging that!~ <3 thanks for taking part and sharing!
Oh yeah, these trees are just magnificent. Thank your for your great challenge and for promoting the beauty of our planet and raising awareness of the need to protect it! Much appreciated.
