La planta de onoto ( como se le conoce en Venezuela ) su nombre científico Bixa orellana se encuentra en toda América, puede llegar a medir hasta 4 mts de altura es de hojas ovaladas y su fruto es una capsula espinosa ovoide de color rojo cuando está madura. Este fruto es utilizado para colorear las comidas ( aquí en Venezuela especialmente la hallaca ) Es un árbol muy bonito cuando esta cargado de frutos, ahorita está de temporada
También es un rico antioxidante y depurativo del hígado, cuando se padece hepatitis se recomienda tomar las raíces de la mata
Antiguamente era usado por los indígenas para colorear sus telas y pintar sus cuerpos
Tiene muchos usos medicinales: Las cataplasmas de sus hojas colocadas en la frente alivian el dolor de cabeza. Como emplasto sobre las heridas y quemaduras que se quieran cicatrizar
Es anti-inflamatorio

Aca lo conseguimos en los mercados en granos y en polvo; en granos los colocamos en onoteritos con aceite para agregarlo a la comida
