GHOST ISLAND.

Tigress Island, also called Ghost Island, is the furthest from landed civilization, it runs parallel to the coast in Angola, and is about 10 km offshore. The nearest Town is Tombua, 90 km. to the East, and to the South another 90 km away is the tiny settlement of Foz dos Cunene, situated in the Kunene river mouth area.
Tigres Island was once a large port connected to the mainland jutting into the North. 52 years ago the sand washed away and severed the waterline.

Tigres Island creates a sheltered bay between it and the mainland. The name Baia des Tigress means black stripes of the tiger and comes from the black stripes against the yellow dunes.
the warm weather has a rich marine life and is well known to fishermen. Unfortunately, due to the lack of fresh water, it is uninhabitable.
Water had to be shipped or brought in via a dangerous road along the coast. A pump was installed after a pump station was built in 1950, at Foz do Cunene, in the Cunene River. A pipeline was laid onto the island.

Tigress Island is the one island that has physical evidence of a Ghost Island. There are hundreds of abandoned Portuguese structures that are slowly reclaimed by the continual blasting sand.
In the town is an abandoned hospital, a beautiful Church building, and abandoned industries, mainly fish oil.

Herewith pictures of some of the abandoned buildings in the Ghost Island. It gives a sad impression of wasted habitats in a land where many people live in not more than makeshift shacks.

The buildings have peeling paint, and holes in the walls. it is a place with eminently living spaces if inhabitants could live without fresh potable water and with sand.
Also for the modern generation, no cell phone service and been totally cut off from civilization. If this is your way to sever all communication, then this is a place to try and visit.
Ghost Island is known for its abundant bird life, mostly in the wetlands. There are 25 species of birds, as in 33 birds per square meter and has become the place of interest for bird lovers.
