Wildflower series ~ just waiting for the rain
It seems impossible to believe that this is actually alive but these plants thrive on the hill. The blackened appearance is because they get burned regularly but they are fire adapted - they only flower well after fire.
I thought I'd take some pictures now, and will show them again later once they have revived themselves and are flowering. Xerophyta retinervis is one of the so called 'resurrection plants' because it can become completely dried out and burned but it will resume growing 48-72 hours after rain. It is called bobbejaanstert or baboon's tail in one local language and is found all over the South Africa.
There are seven clumps in this little area and as you can see, it is one of the parts of the hill that got burned recently. I look forward to taking pictures once they have leaves and flowers: they are truly spectacular. The leaves look like grass and the flowers are mauve.
Super!
I will also wait for your photos!
I'm very interested to see their flowering.
I did not even hear that there are such plants!
We have many strange plants in this part of the world
You must show us their photos! :-)
You know I will!
Super!!
The photos are very beautiful. The post was also very good to me. Thank you very much for sharing the post among us
great dear
Looks pretty burnt up. Can't wait for a rain. :-)

Impressive how they survive, excellent photographs.
Thank you
Wow, I also wasn’t aware that such a plant exists... or that this process of ‘coming back to live’ after having all your leaves etc burnt so badly is possible in the plant world. I’m very curious too as to what it looks like when in bloom.
The black parts are actually stems and it has no leaves at this time of year
Thats incredible! I can't wait to see the after shots, after they get some rain.
Don't you have any similar bush plants in Aus?
I'm curious to see their flowers.. They can be called phoenix!
Something like that
Interesting. Was the fire natural or man-made?
It's always arson on the hill :-(
Wow!
