Unexpected little rivers
I went for a walk today to clear my head and it has been raining heavily recently, making tiny little temporary streams. This hill is part of part of a ridge system formed by an ancient meteorite strike. Because all these rocky ridges were formed by a catastrophic event, the rock layers are fractured and ground water pours out of many places when the water table rises after heavy rain.
The mosses spend most of the year dried up, grey and dead looking but suddenly revive after rain, then dry out and patiently wait for it to rain again. This is a particularly large kind of moss, similar to sphagnum but its unusual in that it lives in such an hot, arid environment and spends many months baking in the hot sun but doesn't die.
Yellow and green lichens on the rocks add a really trippy effect.

Although autumn is soon turning to winter, the plants are taking advantage of the last rains before all dries up and they have to wait their turn to grow for another six months or more.

I thought that moss grows only in those countries where it is cold. It survives well at a significant negative temperature. But it turns out that moss survives well and with high temperature and lack of water.

Desert-like areas are fascinating; the way the vegetation "rapid cycles" when rain comes. And then there are the really unique plants like the "Rose of Jericho" that can lie dormant for years before coming back to life...
