The vast expanse of Missoula's Rocky Mountains
Mt. Sentinel & University Mountain are located in the beautiful city of Missoula, Montana. Standing at 5,158 feet (1,572 m) and 5,810 feet (1,771 m) respectively, this pair of peaks looms directly over the University of Montana. Sharing a ridge, they can both be summited via a moderately strenuous hiking trail. It is 1.75 miles (2.8 km) to the top of Mt. Sentinel and an additional 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to reach University's summit. This is an exhilarating day hike that rewards those who climb to the top with panoramic views.
The trailhead for Mt. Sentinel can be found right on the university campus. A considerable amount of elevation is gained in a short time, so be sure to bring healthy snacks and water if you intend to ascend all the way to the top of University Mountain. The physical exertion required of you is a small price to pay, for dramatic mountainscapes can be seen in all directions. From both summits, it is clear why Big Sky Country is so highly regarded as an outdoor destination. Please enjoy these photographs of my adventure in Missoula, Montana!
