The bird that became extinct in 1894 due to single cat!
The Stephens Island Wren was a beautiful small flightless songbird. It looked like a small mouse when it ran across the ground with quick light steps. its scientific name is Xenicus lyalli.
Where did it live?
It was found at Stephens Island in New Zealand. It is one of the five flightless songbirds of the world which all lived in islands. They had large feet and short tail. They need not to fly because there was no shortage of food in the island. They jumped from branch to branch which were lower to ground.
When did it become extinct?
This small bird become extinct on earth in 1894. There are different theories about its extinction but it is generally believed that the last species of wren actually fell victim to the island's single cat which killed all the birds. This cat belonged to a lighthouse keeper who lived in island to light the lighthouse. This lighthouse was used to warn the ships at night about the rocks.
The remains of this bird have been found at different locations of the island.
