The Wandering Red & Black Spider

in #nature9 years ago

This small but colourful spider belongs to the family Nicodamidae(known as Red & Black spiders). The one in the photos appears to be Nicodamus peregrinus, the Wandering Red & Black Spider. My books tell me they are found low to the ground among leaf litter and fallen branches. This one was aiming higher. I found on top of a picnic table on a local reserve. Males average 10.5mm and females a about 11mm.

( All photos, videos, and text on this blog are by @mostly.nature )

Both photos are of a male.

That is creepy coloring for a spider!

Its assumed to be quite venomous but I'm not going to be the one to find out for sure ☺
