The Tiny Silvereye (Six Photos)

This Small bird is known as the Silvereye, Zosterops lateralis. At around 11cm (a bit over 4") they are among Australia's smallest birds. The eat insects and fruit. In the second photo you can see one eating a Native Cherry in my backyard. Here in Tasmania we have the subspecies Zosterops lateralis lateralis. In Autumn they start forming large flocks and many of them head to the mainland for the winter. Some Tasmanian birds reach parts of Queensland . Looking at the sighings on the E-Bird web site I notice at least one Tasmanian bird made it as far as Gladstone in Queensland. That's a distance of about , about 2,000 km as the Crow Silvereye flies. Quite an amazing effort for such a small bird!
