The Giant Black & White Fly
This fly does not have the most imaginative common name. It is simply known as the Giant Black & White Fly, Formosia (Euamphibolia) speciosa. It belongs the the family Tachinidae. The adult flies feed on nectar and pollen, however, like all Tachinid flies they are actually parasites. They lay their eggs on logs and stumps where they have detected the scent of scarab beetle larvae and the fly maggots then feed on these infant beetles. The photos below were taken here in Tasmania - in my backyard to be precise :-)
