Shark Encounter

in #nature7 years ago

Grey Nurse Shark (Carcharias taurus) at Montague Island, NSW, Australia.
Despite their fearsome appearance Grey Nurse Sharks are placid, curious creatures. They were nearly hunted to extinction on the east coast of Australia during the 1960's through to 1980's by recreational & commercial fishermen, because they were thought to be a man eater.
In 1984 their numbers were so low the government intervened & they were the first shark in the world to be afforded protective status, despite this they are still regarded as critically endangered with as few as 1500 remaining.
We are involved with shark monitoring on the east coast of NSW & more specifically South East coastal area, for more info https://www.facebook.com/gnscoast/ & http://www.spotashark.com/
