The coldest ocean

in #nature8 years ago

The coldest ocean in the world, as you might expect, is the Arctic ocean. It is located in the center of the Arctic and is the smallest in the amount of world ocean water (about 4%). The proximity to warmer waters supports life in this world of eternal ice.

Many explorers have devoted entire expeditions to the active study of the coldest ocean in the world. Norwegian, Swedish and Russian pioneers were looking for the Northern passage from Europe to Asia.

Barents, Chelyuskin, Laptev and Pronchishchev, whose names were mentioned by many places in the region, made a great contribution to the study of this area.

Under the cold water of the Arctic ocean is a large-scale mountain chain, which is named after Lomonosov.

The climate here is truly harsh. The temperature is about 30-40 degrees with a "minus"sign. A little less than half a year here dominates the polar night. Darkness, piercing wind, permafrost. All this characterizes what is happening here very clearly.

Surprisingly, in the cold water of the Northern ocean there are many species of algae, plankton and fish. Cod, herring and halibut here feel particularly comfortable. You can also meet whales, seals, walruses and bears here. The abundance of life is primarily due to the saturation of cold water with oxygen, which is not enough in warm places.
