Differences between Asian and African elephants ....... Part 2
There are many differences between Asian and African elephants. Both types of elephants are members of the elephant family. Phil Maximus is also known as the Asian Elephant and there is an African savannah elephant and (African elephant of the jungle). Here are the main differences between the African elephant and the Asian elephant
the size
The African elephant is much larger, with a length of about 4 m, while Asian elephants are more than 3.5 m
the weight
African elephants weigh between 4,000 - 7,500 km, while Asian elephants weigh between 3,000 - 6,000 km
Head and lip shape
African elephants have more diverse heads. The top of the head is shaped like a single dome while the Asian elephants have a dome-shaped head twin with an indentation in the center. The lower lips of the two species also differ, as they are pointed in Asian elephants, while their size is short in African elephants.
Ear size
The African elephants' ear is a map of Africa but the Asian elephants are as small as the Indian elephant. The African ear is larger and up to the top and above the neck, this is the opposite of what in Asian elephants.
skin
The skin of African elephants is more wrinkled than Asian elephants
Ribs
In general, African elephants have more ribs than Asian elephants, although the number of ribs varies in individual animals. African elephants have up to 21 pairs, and Asian have up to 20 pairs.
Fang
All African elephants, male and female, have fangs - while some Asian elephants have their fangs. African elephants are larger than Asian elephants, about 50% of Asian elephants, and come in a smaller percentage of males with a small cane such as tushes.
Nails
Nails vary in African elephants and Asian elephants. The African forest elephant has 5 fingernails on its front feet and 4 on the back, while African savannah elephants have 4 fingernails on its front feet and 3 on the back. The Asian elephant comes with 5 fingernails on its front 4 feet (rarely 5)
