Intro- to QUOGUE WILDLIFE REFUSE

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

Quogue Wildlife Refuse located in Quogue Long Island NY just east of Westhampton NY, is a 300 acre non-profit run wildlife preserve and center.

Founded in 1934 by duck hunters turned conservationists, after a severe Winter that took its toll on Wintering water fowl.

The refuse is opened 365 days a year, from sunrise to sunset. Encompasses diverse habitats of ponds, woodlands and pine barrens, with 7 miles of trails.

Over looking the main pond called "Old-ice pond" is the Charles Banks Belt building. Built over the water with large windows to view the pond an water birds.

This building opened Tues, Thurs, Sat and Sun from 11 am to 4 pm, houses exhibits of reptiles and birds along with live turtles, snakes, fish and other creatures.

There is also an animal complex that houses animals that are permanently injured or unable to be released back into the wild. They include Bald Eagle, owls, falcons, foxes and more.

Educational programs have been offered for children since the 1960's. They teach about the outdoor world and help to develop an appreciation for nature. Include are .....

  • Guided walking tours

  • Introduction to live birds and animals

  • Show where local live birds live.

  • Kayaking Quantuck Creek for adults and older children 5th grade and up.

  • Resident animals to view and learn about.

The Refuse is solely managed by Southampton Township Wildfowl Association, (STWA). Since 2006 when a54 year lease expired with NYS Dept. OF Environmental Conservation, (NYSDEC). Funds were lost from the (NYSDEC) to help fund the Staff and Utilities. But (STWA) board of directors were free to make improvements with active fund raising.
The Refuse is a unique "Gem" in my mind. I will do a @lyndsaybowes #walkwithme of the trails and sights in the near future. Stay Tuned.

What a view and I sure hope fundraising keeps this place going.

Government can't come close to caring for something like Private can. This place is an example. Since losing there Govt. control place shines.

Good for them! Good riddens government! : )

interesting idea! You can watch birds in the wild and do not disturb them.
