BAMBOO /Tallest Grass

Bamboo, the tallest member of the grass family. Some species can grow up to 30 meters / 100 feet. Sprout to 4 cm /1.6 inches per hour and 91 cm / 3 feet in a day.

It grows mainly in warm moist climates. But many of the 1,400 species can be found in temperate and mountainous places.

Depending on species, most Bamboo seldom flower. When they do flower the plant declines and usually dies. Some only flower at intervals of 50 or more years.

Many uses can be found for Bamboo taken from wild and cultivated stands. Bamboo is considered the strongest woody plant on he Earth. Having a greater tensile strength than many types of steel and heartier than Oak

  • Construction material

    • Inside ... flooring, walls, support columns, furniture
    • Outside ... frames, joists, studs, braces, rafters,
      sheathing, roofing, outside walls, scaffolding
  • Food / Cooking
    Bamboo shoots, cutting boards, utensils

  • Clothing
    Fibers used in clothing / bedding ... soft as cotton

  • Medicine, paper, textiles, musical instruments

The list goes on and new uses are regularly found.

Despite all the positives things, there are some negatives. It can be one of the most Invasive plant there is. It spreads through Runners. They are roots or "Rhizomes" that new shoots grow from.
