in #nature7 years ago

The stone money of the island of YAP is the hardest currency in the world.

The island of YAP called the ' land of giant stone money, and it is considered a traditional district in the country of Micronesia. YAP consists of 4 Islands: YAP, Map, Tamila-Gagil and Rumung.

According to legend, long ago a few residents of the island of YAP landed on the island of Palau, which is located at a distance of 400 miles from YAP international. There they found a very beautiful stone, and when he brought them to the island, residents decided to use stones as money. They are called Rai.

To receive these "coins", made great efforts. First you need a canoe sailed to the island of Palau to obtain permission from local leader to the extraction of stones. With primitive tools they really did in the caves stone slabs, and then started their treatment. These plates it was necessary to make round, and in the middle to drill a hole to put a stone on a pole and bring it back to the boat.

Surprisingly, in the twenty-first century, someone still continues to use the money that were first used at the dawn of the market, the value of which is determined by the size and, most importantly, how many people died in the process of transportation of stone to the island.

The size of the stones is very different: the largest have a diameter up to 3.6 metres, a depth of 0.33 meters and weigh 4 tons. The smallest of the Rai have a diameter of 7-8 centimeters. The largest of the drives on the Japanese archipelago is located on the neighboring island Rumung.
