Clouds, rainbows and hailstorms
Greetings, dearest Steemians! Wishing you all an amazing 2018, with double rainbows, extraordinary colours and natural wonder to light your lives this coming year. In honour of the spirit of the new year, I thought I'd share the sendoff which Johannesburg gave us on December 30th.
The most amazing clouds
The clouds went from brightly lit...

...to dazzling gold...

...to deep pink and salmon.

All the while the whiter cloud in the foreground played off against the showoff mammatus clouds.
With a stunning rainbow
I watched the rainbow form.
Somehow these late afternoon rainbows always "start" next to the palm tree, and this time the light obliged by lighting up the palm's crown.

You can just see the rainbow starting to form. In a few seconds, it looked like this:

Suddenly the angle of the sun, the water vapour in the sky and all the other factors that go into making a full sky rainbow with a double rainbow echo came together, and the Rainbow Symphony was in full play.

Playing around on Google, I made this admittedly amateur animation to give you some idea of how it progressed.

After a wicked hailstorm
So what caused this spectacular sky? A good old Joburg hailstorm.
This is what our garden looked like as the hailstorm was getting going.

Frankly, we got off lightly. There were parts of Joburg which got badly hammered, including a shopping centre which was originally reported to have suffered a roof collapse and two resultant fatalities, but luckily the next day it was confirmed the damage was much less severe and there were no fatalities - check out the anti-climactic story here. People who live in squatter camps are always more vulnerable as the structures they live in simply aren't strong enough to withstand the wind, rain and hail. For good measure, sometimes Mother Nature serves up a localised tornado, and wouldn't you know that she usually does this in areas with flimsy housing.
Do hailstorms, rainbows and clouds offer any lessons?
Perhaps...but I doubt it. It's easy to draw lessons looking back - to say that we know that after a period of trial like a hailstorm, there'll be sky artistry and that the beauty will uplift us. Frankly, when it's hailing like that, I'm thinking "Please don't dent my car...please don't dent my car...."
It's only afterwards as I watch the golden light begin to infuse the air and turn all that was drab into warm-hued artworks that I realise if we scamper upstairs we might be treated to a rainbow. This time we got more than a rainbow; we got clouds which could have graced a Renaissance painting.
My lesson?
I managed to give myself tennis elbow in December. It's playing havoc with simple things like lifting a mug of tea (or worse, a bottle of wine) and I get little crosses in my eyes and see Tweetie birds when I shake someone's hand - not to mention typing on a keyboard is a really dumb thing to do as it aggravates the condition badly.
Is tennis elbow my hailstorm? Will I get rainbows and Renaissance clouds once it heals?
I don't know the answer either. Stay tuned!
Quite a transition to get to a beautiful rainbow. So sorry you are having the tennis elbow. It can be quite painful. Since you are posting again I hope that means you are starting to recover. ❤️🐓🐓 Ellie Mae.
P.s. Thank you for resteems. Much Love.
Hi Ellie Mae, I doubt the photos can convey just how awesome a spectacle it was, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. And thank you for the kind wishes. Yes, it's getting better, and I should be really careful not to aggravate it. I had it once before, about 12 years ago, and it stuck with me for a couple of months. This time I'm being a better patient 🙄😜. And you are so welcome for the resteems! Those were amazing posts. Much love 💖💖
Magical skies always give me a sense of hope
How lovely!
Wow nice post and clouds
Thank you, @mindhunter07
We also saw the clouds in Pretoria, luckily we never had the hail where I stay, put those clouds were beautiful and menacing at the same time!!
It was apparently a huge storm! Glad you had a chance to see the clouds. They were awe-inspiring, weren't they? And lucky the hail gave you a miss.
It looks like in heaven. Amazing photos. Amazing clouds. Living in a rainbowland...
How lucky are we that we can pretty much predict if we're going to see a rainbow? And those clouds...oh, my word! I didn't use a filter. Those are as close to the real colours as I remember! Thank you for taking the time to read my post, @luckysteem :-)
Stunning pics and post :)
Thank you, @lynb <3
Marvelous photo shoot ever. Awesome natural beauty. Thanks for sharing such a good post @kiligirl
Thank you, @pariza! Glad you enjoyed it. The clouds did all the work.
Welcome back, have not heard of you for a while. Love the Mammatus clouds, also saw them and made a post. You will not believe but I also have a tennis elbow for the last couple of months. I have tried everything to nurse it back to health but to no avail. Are you going for the surgery? I am thinking about it at this stage!
Thank you, @marcel1965 - so sorry you're also struggling with tennis elbow! Will look for you Mammatus clouds post.
Over the holidays I tried to stay away from the computer because mousing and typing are exactly the kind of movements which aggravate it (as I suppose you know only too well!).
I'm far from surgery as an option just yet. Been getting physio which is helping, and also wearing a brace and icing it (which REALLY helps). I'm also trying to do as much as possible of the simple things like opening a fridge door, picking up breadboards and the like with my left hand. The physio recommends I put my arm in a sling...but....
Next stage might be a cortisone injection if this doesn't clear up in the next two weeks. Have you had one, and if so, how much did it help?
Thanks for your input. Both my dad and sister had a tennis elbow. Both went for cortisone injections without any results other than short term. Only thing that helped them was the operation but the problem is that you are out of action for six weeks. My big problem is that I have it in both my elbows so I cannot even save the one with the other!
Oh my gosh - that sounds really serious. Apparently the very best treatment is total rest, which would be really hard for you with TE in both elbows! Tim's been experimenting with online dictation. Maybe that would help you rest your elbow a bit?
The last time I had it, it went away after about 6-8 weeks of physio, bracing and rest. I hope it goes away again without any need for further intervention....
All the best! Hope it goes away!
And you too!
Congratulations for your sensibility and patience!
Thank you, @juniordionesio
Awesome Post! And Also Great Captures.
