in #nature8 years ago (edited)

What I remember about this grass is when my childhood on, I and friends often pluck a bunch of grain and put into the hole sleeve or collar, and we are excited while also amused when the grass was moving in. The shape of this grass, like hair or short thread with a pointed tip and rigid with a length of approximately 5 cm. Entwining each other if collected in one place, and when moistened, it will be moving its own.

This grass is more commonly called by Malay people: rumput merak (peacock grass), but Acehnese call it naleung sunteing puteih, and the English call it: Christmas grass. The Latin name of this peacock grass is Themeda arguens (L.) Hack. It lives mainly in tropical areas, members of the tribe Poaceae. The Grass is widespread in Asia, Australasia, the Pacific, and South America.

According to The Invasive Species Compendium:

"T. arguens is a fast growing and very aggressive grass. At present, this species has been listed as invasive in Jamaica and Fiji, and it is spreading across these islands displacing and outcompeting native grasses and herbs." [source]

Naming of this grass with "rumput merak" (peacock grass) because when it was blooms, grain grass bloom like peacock tail when it expands. The Grass is like places that are open, lots of sunny and dry; along roads and embankments, as well as in the pasture. And in Malaysia, said, the grass has been specifically developed for cleanser the blood and hair conditioner.

Excellence of this grass is able to thrive in areas of dry and arid regions. This means that the grass can be used as the main feed livestock in times of drought, despite the low nutritional content.
