"The Brinicle" - an ice stalactite - beautiful but deadly Natural phenomenon of ice in a Time Lapse

in #nature8 years ago (edited)

Winter at the ocean...

In Europe winter really was coming these days.
Depending on your location you maybe noticed the days got darker and colder
and maybe you also got some snow around in your environment.

But I guess i am right that most of you don't experience the winter season near the ocean or even at the ocean.

If you ever stayed near the ocean in winter you may noticed that it mostly won't freeze although the area is covered in snow and even lakes or rivers were frozen.

So. Can the ocean freeze ?
...
Of course it can !!!
Even if rarely to see,
places like the arctic-ocean are proving.

This turns out very simple.
The ocean consists of salt water which doesnt freeze at 0° celsius or 32° fahrenheit like fresh water does.
Depending on the waters salinity it will freeze at much lower temperatures.

So what does happen if fresh water and salt water getting together in a really cold envíronment ?

This scenario can create a very rare and beautiful Natural phenomenon,
called - Brinicle !!

A brinicle (or ice stalactite) forms beneath sea ice when a flow of extremely cold, saline water is introduced to an area of ocean water, being the undersea equivalent of a hollow stalactite or icicle.
The formation of a brinicle was first filmed in 2011 by producer Kathryn Jeffs and cameramen Hugh Miller and Doug Anderson for the BBC series Frozen Planet.
(wikipedia "brinicle")

Watch this very nice time lapse record to see a very unknown natural phenomenon.

Brinicle- Sinking Brine

I hope you enjoyed watching this beautiful scenario.

Fun fact.
If oceanwater freezes, only the water parts are doing so.
The salt molecules are pushed below the surface of the ice.
So as result, the ice of frozen salt water turns out as fresh water.

Upped and followed. Awesome stuff. Make my time-lapse work look like amateur ville!

This is MAGNIFICENT!!! Breathtaking, really... Thank you for sharing what an example of a dreamer! Thank you and NAMASTE :)

thank you.
very nice video.

Very good, short and very sweet in deed. Thanks, I have always been fascinated by this natural phenomena of monumental beauty since I have seen it in the BBC documentary. Namaste :)

yes.
i couldnet forget it since i was seeing this.

I bet, lucky you! Namaste :)

Very interesting post, thank you!

looks amazing and horrible, a little disaster for us, but a terrible disaster for organisms at the bottom.

right.
isn't it suprising that this does have such a dangerous impact for the individuals at the bottom.
we have to imagine that the brinicle needs much more time to grow than the video is showing us.

I immediately started to read about this phenomenon in other sources, they write that it grow at a rate of 30 centimeters per hour

I love learning things like this. Very good and well written post.

thank you very much

Wow, I never knew such a thing existed. Thanks for sharing!

i am glad you like it. :)

That was the coolest thing I have seen in a while!
