in #nature7 years ago

Some 12 million people will be able to see the whole phenomenon from the comfort of their homes. Another 7 million will be moved only with the aim of witnessing the event from a place of privilege. For months, the total solar eclipse was installed in the media agenda. The expectation is so high that it is expected to be the most tweeted event, instagrameado and photographed in history. Already received its motto: "the eclipse of the century".

-What is a total solar eclipse?

The total solar eclipse is the phenomenon that occurs when the Moon hides the Sun and unfolds its shadow on Earth. Unlike the partial eclipse, its entire surface is hidden behind the Moon.

"When will it happen?"

Next 21 of August.

"How long will it last?"

The entire solar eclipse will be visible from 10:16 am local time in Lincoln Beach, Oregon. From there, its shadow will shift to the east for almost 90 minutes. It will cross the states of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina.

The eclipse will culminate in Charleston, South Carolina at 2:48 pm local time. The best site to witness the phenomenon will be Cardondale, Illinois, as it will be where the sun will be covered the longest: 2 minutes and 41 seconds

- How is the phenomenon generated?

"A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon interposes between the Earth and the Sun, generating a cone of shadow that is projected on a part of the Earth's surface," Daniela Pérez, an astronomy doctor and postdoctoral researcher at CONICET of the Argentine Institute of Radioastronomy (IAR).

"Where can it be seen?"

The eclipse will be possible in the fourteen states of the United States mentioned above, from the west coast to the east coast. "The partial eclipse will be observed from Canada, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands and in Northwest Europe," she added. In South America, however, you will not be able to witness it.

- Where can be watched by streaming?

NASA has planned an unprecedented deployment to follow minute by minute the movement of the entire eclipse. It is estimated that the shadow will travel at a speed of 3,878 kilometers per hour. Then the space agency will follow with two airplanes with mounted cameras. You can see it from the official website. In turn, Infobae will fold to the coverage.
