Poinsettia, Poinsettia, oh where for art thou Poinsettia?

It is 1825 and our beloved Poinsettia #flower has ventured from Mexico to the newly established United States. Minister Joel Roberts Poinsett imported this beauty of a #plant and had the audacity to name this vibrant specimen after himself.

Are you indeed a toxic beauty dear Poinsettia?

No, it would seem you are not. For a 50lb child would have to eat 500 leaves to accumulate enough toxins to be harmful.

But what of your origins dear Poinsettia.
What is your true name?

Ahhh I see, the ancient Aztecs loved your luscious red color as well. Used to reduce fever and as a source of red dye, the ancient Aztecs called you Cuitlaxochitl, "Flower that grows in residues".

Alas, I cannot pronounce Cuitlaxochitl so I will call you by your foreign name, I hope you dont mind. Growing as big as a tree in my yard in Hawaii I have enjoyed your effortless beauty.

Thank you for your unique #holiday appeal dear Poinsettia. Your #history is surprising and your colors are divine. Blessed are those who gaze upon your leaves, this and evey season yet to come.
