Hansenator in the Everglades - Alligator Alley

in #nature7 years ago

Hey Steemers!

I love the nature category and I've made this trip so many times I decided it's a good time to post about it.

Some General Info

Alligator Alley is about 80 mi. long, from toll plaza to toll plaza on Interstate 75. The toll one way or the other is $3 total, so not bad. There are several rest areas and recreational areas throughout the Alley all with the same information boards. Haha. I guess they only expect a person to stop once on their 1.5 hour trip.

Some main points:

  • Huge breeding ground for a wide variety of birds, including the American Bittern, Little Blue Heron, White Ibis, Great Blue Heron, Wood Stock, Roseate Spoonbill, Snowy Egret, and Great Egret.
  • Also home to the American Crocodile, Alligator, and endangered Florida Panther.
  • Tree islands are imperative to the development of the Everglades. They make up "less than 2% of the area". Endangered by fluctuating water levels and non-native plants and wildlife.
