Dimmuborgir Lava Caves And Formations
Dimmuborgir is a place on Iceland where you can find many lava caves and unusual shapes of lava formations. It is located pretty much next to the lake Myvatn at northern Iceland. 2300 years ago this place used to be a lake but when lava flow entered the lake then water started to vaporize. In the water, lava solidified and left these structures behind. This place is below the surrounding ground. Lake was at least 10 meters deep because longest structures and pillars are that high.
This is a huge tourist magnet because it's so accessible so if you ever go and want to have a more peaceful walk then go late in the evening when you are there in the summer. Once there you can choose whether you want to walk long short or long route there. If I remember correctly there were about 4 different length tracks. I was there in July.
