Bielik polowanie urządza z zasiadki (na ziemi lub na słupie, wypatrując ofiar) lub z lotu patrolowego. Łapie ryby z powietrza i podobnie jak rybołów może zanurzyć się w tym celu w wodzie. Gdy upatrzy dużą grupę ptaków, stara się odsunąć pojedyncze osobniki od reszty i dopiero wtedy je atakuje. Zwykle nęka zdobycz zmuszając ją do ciągłego nurkowania aż ta wyczerpie siły. Może też, lecąc nisko nad wodą, atakować znienacka. Czasem zdarza mu się odebrać pokarm innym ptakom oraz wydrom.
