Rock Moss in the middle of the forest

Some of the granite outcroppings in the middle of the Colville National Forest are near springs and pretty constant sources of water so the humidity is higher under the canopy. This helps the moss take over the surface of the rocks and form thick carpets. As the heat of summer comes on the carpet breaks up like a floating ice field. Smaller round or almost octagonal shapes form as the moss dries out and contracts on itself. The moss is amazing in its intricacy and ability to form such large masses that completely cover the rock surfaces.

I'm always captivated by the moss with the fractal like appearance of it. The world of mosses is huge and I am still learning
