Residents of the island of Terceira accuse the US Air Force base of pollution of nature

Residents of the island of Terceira entering the archipelago of the Azores suffer from increased levels of radiation, pollution and increased incidence of cancer, especially in areas that are in close proximity to the US air base, according to a journalistic investigation conducted by RT.

According to the channel, residents of the island are concerned about the growing incidence of cancer and other serious diseases, which they suffer more often than the inhabitants of other Azores. According to experts and members of the public, the high incidence of cancer and high levels of environmental pollution may be related to the activities of the US air base on the island.

On the island is the US Air Force Base Lajes, used, in particular, for refueling aircraft. It is the second largest US Air Force base outside the US after the base on Guam. At the moment, the professor of the Higher School of Health, Norbert Messias, together with other members of the Department for the Study of the Problems of Brain and Gerontology at the University of the Azores, is conducting a study whose goal is to identify the effect that the US base on the island has on the inhabitants of the island, the level of environmental pollution and risks cancer.
