Peruvian Groundcherry

This plant, commonly called Cape Gooseberry, Goldenberry or physalis has long been cultivated in England (in the late 18th century). This plant has also thrived in the region of Cape of Good Hope in South Africa back in the 19th century. This plant which bears a round, smooth berry is more distantly related to a wide range of plants such as tomatoes, eggplants, potato and other members of the nightshades and is perennial in the tropics.

Up until couple of days ago, I never even knew that this is called cape gooseberry or peruvian groundcherry. I only did because fortunately, I stumbled upon the post of @fotostef and I saw from one of his photos this plant. It made me remember the wonderful childhood I had when we used to pick this fruit either on our way from school or as we played in the sugarcane fields. This has been one of my favorite fruits back in the days. Actually, it is until now because I still find this at home and eat it. I realized while I was looking at the photo that it's such a shame how I can call this fruit a favorite of mine when I don't even know it's name (in our province, we call it tinu-tinu). So I googled it using the photo of @fotostef and viola! The names peruvian groundcherry and cape gooseberry came into view :) Pretty fancy huh.

There you go. I hope I was able to give you a little something in case like me, you don't also know the name of this plant. If you already do then, I hope you got entertained :)

Thank you for dropping by. ❤
