...or rather 121 a year has passed! All the good days and enjoy your holiday!

January 23, 1895 man first set foot on the coast of Antarctica. It was the captain of the Norwegian whaling vessel "Antarctica" Leonard Christensen and two passengers of the ship - the Norwegian Henrik Johan Bull and his friend, a teacher of natural sciences, Karlsten Borchgrevink.

Karlsten Borchgrevink

"Antarctic" was just a whaling ship, which is not just floating in the harsh Antarctic waters. In one of the trips, in search of prey, Captain Christensen sent a "Antarctica" far to the south. He entered the Ross Sea and reaching up to 74 degrees 10 'South Latitude, see ice-free coastal strip. This event took place at the Victoria Land.

The honor of landing on the ground of Antarctica belongs Karlstenu Borchgrevink persuaded the captain to pull the boat on the water and ashore. (Later, Borchgrevink and Kristensen contested each other's superiority landing on the mainland coast.)

As a scientist, Borchgrevink collected samples of minerals in Antarctica, I found and described the growing lichen on the rocks there and left a note in his notebook about the swim near the boat jellyfish. At the same time the members of the crew of "Antarctica" was lucky enough to watch on the new continent aurora. Borchgrevink brought lichen found him in London for the International Congress of Geographers.

After returning from an expedition Bull and Borchgrevink became enemies: each of them independently planned an expedition to Antarctica, but because of mutual competition, their efforts have been unsuccessful. The reports on the voyage to "the Antarctic" one too stuck out his role and did not recognize the merits of another.

After three years on the ship "Southern Cross" Borhgrёvink again sailed to Antarctica, but as the head of a large expedition lasted from 1898 to 1900 years. He first engaged in Antarctic research. He collected rocks and lichens. Thus, Borchgrevink can be considered the first scientist and explorer of the Antarctic continent. Despite the fact that in England Borhgrёvinka considered an amateur, his report in 1895 on the 6th International Geographical Congress in London, his lectures, and articles in magazines and newspapers, established his fame and led to renewed scientific interest in Antarctica.

There is a theory that first landed on the coast of Antarctica American whaler John Davis in 1821 (Antarctic Peninsula). Perhaps other whalers reached the Antarctic coast until 1895. However, no supporting data for this is not, and who in fact first discovered Antarctica to learn not succeed.

I wasn't aware until now that the South Pole experienced Aurora Borealis. I thought that was just in the North Pole. Now I know better.
