Birds of the Riverbank : The Kingfisher
One of the most beautiful and colourful birds of the river is the Kingfisher. Living off a diet of minnows sticklebacks and baby fish. These birds eye have developed such that they can take into account the refraction of the water when looking for fish.
The male and female look almost identical apart from the lower mandible which is red on the female.
Often perching on branches at their favourite fishing spots they can be seen diving for food and the flying back to the nest to feed their young.
Normally laying a clutch of 4 bright blue eggs Both mother and father feed the young and protect their territory very well.
There is no better sight that watching these birds dive into the water and return with a fishes almost every time
