One of the largest surfaces in the world covered in ice is melting

in #nature6 years ago

More and more lakes are formed by meltwater in the ice sheet of Greenland, in a recent scientific expedition alarming new patterns were recorded under the Greenland's temporary lakes, until now it had been thought that these "drainage events" were isolated incidents, but this research shows that the lakes form a massive network and become increasingly interconnected as the climate heats up.

As an example we have a lake of 5.6 square kilometers melted and drained in less than two hours dragging other lakes more, "This growing network of meltwater lakes, which currently extends more than 100 kilometers inland and reaches elevations of up to 2,000 meters above Sea level poses a threat to the long-term stability of the Greenland ice sheet, "explains Christoffersen.

This layer of ice, which covers 1.7 million square kilometers, and which remained relatively stable until 25 years ago, now loses one billion tons of ice per day, this causes a millimeter increase in sea level per year, a much faster rate than was predicted only a few years ago.

A fact to keep in mind

If all the Greenland ice melted, the ocean would rise 6 meters. And while this is unlikely to happen in this century, even a minimal increase in the level of the seas can have a drastic effect on the world.

Means we have more space to fight each other

Global warming sucks, its us the humans who are responsible for it.

Oh hell,
That is scary..

Melting of snow is bringing the hidden places to ground and making the surrounding sink .......
