Waste Disposal in the UK and How Can We Help in our Waste Problem in the Philippines

Here in Ards and North Down waste council says that "they don't provide waste disposal services, they provide waste recycling services." And everyone follows the proper ways of recycling for collection.

Coming from the Philippines, this is one of the things that I really appreciate here in Northern Ireland. Householders know how to properly dispose of their waste. I haven't seen trash lying in the ground nor people littering. Although we all know because you could be fine if you do so. But we all have the signages and warnings in the Philippines, but still, you can see trash lying everywhere.

All households have their own bins given by the council. As of now, there are 3 willy bins and 1 box. The willy bins are of different colours with specific things to put on. There are blue, brown, grey bin and the glass box.

Blue Bin

It is collected every fortnight and for recyclables ♻ only such as:

  • paper
  • plastic
  • food and drink can
  • cardboard
  • tin foil and aluminium food dishes
  • drinks cartons
  • aerosol cans

Note that we even rinse milk or sauce bottles before we throw it into the bin.

Brown Bin

It is collected every fortnight and is for compostable waste such as:

  • food waste
  • garden waste
  • cold ash
  • shredded paper

We can dispose of our caddy liners in the brown bin if our liner has this logo which says "compostable."

This is the one used in the kitchen to put food waste. Food also can be placed directly to the brown bin.

Grey Bin

It is collected every fortnight and is for non-recyclable waste such as:

  • nappies
  • plastic bags
  • clothes hangers
  • paint pots
  • polystyrene

Glass Box

It is collected every four weeks and all for any kinds of glass bottles and jars including jam, baby food and beer bottles.

Bins should be presented with lids close at the lane on the day of collection. And if they check it and sees that you put what's not meant for that bin it won't be collected and worse you can be fine.

Also if you have too much rubbish that can't dispose of in the bin, you can bring it to skip yard.

We need to bring this to the skip for it won't all fit in the bin.

So here in the skip, there are lots of large containers and you can read the labels to put your things properly.

Here's what you can bring in here, everything. Just make sure you put the things where it's meant to.

Great waste management they have and great people who follow and responsible enough to achieve this.

Isn't it just right to dispose of our waste properly? After all, that's our waste. We are responsible for it, not just the government but us all.

I can't help but feel sad about our waste problem in the Philippines and how it's affecting the environment. Tons of wastes are being dumped in landfills every day.

Pile of Rubbish

How it affects the already polluted air especially in Manila where I live. How dirty our seas full of garbage and plastics with the living creatures in the water dying. When will we wake up and do something?

And that something is not something that our government can solve alone. We cannot blame all to the government. We all must take action. We can start by segregating our waste. We all know what's degradable and bio-degradable I believe and what we can reuse. By bringing our own recyclable bag when going to shop instead of using a plastic bag that can't be recycled. By throwing our garbage even a single candy wrapper in the bin, not on the street. By picking up a trash and disposed of it properly. And I know if one does it, and others and others then everyone will do the same. If we all can be responsible and have discipline. This issue cannot be resolved by a single person but a single person can be the start to make a difference. Let's start with us. And we must start it now. Before it's too late.

I wish you get the message of this post.

How can we be of help in our waste problem in the Philippines? Can you share your thoughts?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
