Daily Nature Fix: Glaciers at a Distance. (Original Photos)

in #nature6 years ago

Hello nature fans. I usually look for neat and fancy close up photos to post for these Daily Nature Fix posts, but tonight I realized I have a lot of cool photos of glaciers taken from a good mile or more away. With that being said, I'll be sharing some of those photos tonight!

^^^These twin glaciers are Skaftafellsjökull (left) and Svínafellsjökull (right), which are both actually tongues of the massive Vatnajökull. Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in all of Europe. These beauties live along the southern coast of Iceland. I took this photo about 3 miles from the glaciers, maybe a little more. I like the picture especially for the low hanging clouds that were floating around.

^^^ Since we're talking about Iceland, this is another tongue of Vatnajökull. I took this photo last month and I'm not even sure what the name of this on is, to be honest. We were much closer, maybe a mile from this one. The photo was just taken out of the car window as we pulled off the road.

^^^This picturesque glacier is located in Juneau, Alaska. It is the Mendenhall Glacier, and it's the first glacier I ever saw in person. It blew my mind. A massive river of blue, crackled ice snaking it's way some 36 miles up in the mountains. It was hard to get a photo without people in the frame, but I eventually managed.... except the tiny red and yellow kayaks approaching the ice.

^^^This little guy is the saddest in this batch of photos. It was taken in Glacier National Park and it's showing Jackson Glacier, the largest of 25 remaining glaciers in the park. It's sad because, like I said, it's the LARGEST in the park and, if I recall properly, the information sign at the overlook said it's predicted to be completely melted away by 2025ish. :(

^^^ I posted this photo in a DNF a few weeks ago, but I figured it seemed relevant to tonight's theme. It was while flying home from Iceland last month. We flew over Greenland and the skies happened to be crystal clear. The view was stunning. Here, you see a massive highway-like glacier stretching across the landscape and terminating into a massive blue lake.

^^^ Finally, we have this big, ugly chode. It is ugly, but it is, indeed, also large. In fact, it's the largest of all the glaciers I've seen. It is the Grand Pacific Glacier found in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska... but it also stretches into British Columbia. In this photo, the glacier is the black hill stretching across the frame. It may not look large in the photo, but it's actually over 2 miles across. This glacier is pretty much responsible for carving out Glacier Bay, in fact. Pretty cool stuff.

Iceland has some of the most stunning untouched scenery in the World. Have you ever been to the west fjords there? If not I highly recommend. Mind blowing.

Ya know, we've gone to Iceland four times now, but we're still yet to see the west fjords. lol We'll be back... and it's kind of nice to know there's still a lot of awesome to see!

Im jealous you got to Greenland though! Yes westfjords is without doubt worth the mission to get there! Enjoy, thanks for the images.

I was going to comment something about how lucky you are to see all these glaciers while they’re still around but then you said big ugly chode hahah

It IS ugly, is it not? Look at it compared to all the other ones.

Beautiful and wonderful nature

Thank you for posting @customnature , beautiful! Have you been to New Zealand's South Island? There is some superb glacier scenery there, with the Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers within easy reach (by drive and short walk).

We have not been to New Zealand.... yet. It's on our list though!

That's a nice article! These pictures are amazing. Nature is the precious thing we have in this world.

Thanks! Glad you like the photos. And I agree!

Love those glacier shots. Amazing. It's crazy how dirty the glaciers are when you get up close. Much better at a distance ;)

Most of them are dirty, indeed. A few in Iceland are really clean and an incredible blue.

I really need to get there.

Totally fantastic view, and amazing Cold adventure

Great fortune and success to you for this interesting topic!
