DRONE ZONE!!!
Hey everyone, have you ever seen one of these? This is a REAL DRONE, not the 4 propeller type that we daily see flying around and taking pics! When I first got into bee-keeping 5 months ago we had a massive swarm move into one of our hives. I filmed it all and posted it here. At first I thought this was the Queen Bee but with more experience learned that it was not but a Drone. This is a male bee, check out more here as per wikipedia... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drone_(bee)
Last night we 'robbed' one of our hives. The word 'robbed' sounds so bad let's rather call it harvested honey shall we? This was our second biggest hive and swarm they have 3 supers on and our Mega Swarm has 4 supers on. We got 8 full frames from this hive which we are currently spinning (extracting honey from the frames)
I love this pic, for some or other reason he was hanging on to this blade of grass with his two front legs. I am not sure what is up with this drone but he sure made for some really nice pictures!
You may be wondering why I am not getting stung? Take a guess? The drones do not sting (male bees) they are nice like that ;) We can teach our female counterparts something from this do you not agree?? ;)
This was the hive he came from. This is our second biggest swarm currently with 3 supers on. I put the supers with the windows on the larger swarms, notice the window is on super #2 as to see when and what level of development they have built and filled the combs in order for us to know when to harvest, novel right?
I will do a post in the near future featuring the frames, honey and nectar we pulled from this lovely little swarm.
Be sure to stay tuned for more of me bee-keeping adventures.
Cheer$;)
You are so brave for holding the bee. :)
