Autumn Refreshes the Soul
Our amazing Sugar Maple tree in front of our house.
I can't explain the exhilarating feeling I get in September when the sultry, steamy summer air gives way to the cool, dry Northern breeze, signaling Autumn's approach.
For four months the weather is typically the same here in Iowa - hot and uncomfortably humid. It drains me of energy, enthusiasm, and ambition. Just stepping outside from our air-conditioned house into the summer heat can seem tiring.
But periodically in summer, a strong front blows in from Canada, initially firing up strong thunderstorms, but eventually ushering in cool air and dew points in the 50's. These breaks make summer more tolerable. I begin thinking about vibrant-colored maple trees, hot apple cider, warm hooded sweatshirts, farmers bringing in the harvest, and pumpkin ale.
At times I think about the reason behind this change in attitude and new-found energy the crisp fall weather brings about. I believe the chill in the air triggers an instinctive desire to step up the pace and get things done before winter arrives. Like the squirrels gathering and storing their acorns and walnuts, I feel like I need to make winter preparations, such as making sure the exterior of the house is tightened up, and that I have an adequate stash of firewood protected and dry.
My son helping me stack wood after I split it.
My appetite increases as the temperature drops. Hot dishes loaded with meat, potatoes, breading, and gravy are much more appealing in fall rather than in summer. The smell of burning leaves on a chilly evening evokes a sense of comfort that I cannot explain in words. Walking through the woods, smelling the dried leaves, refreshes my mind and body.
I miss trees like that i live in texas dont see to many of them thank you . 7

But other seasons make the soul stinkier?
Summer might, perhaps. Winter has it's perks and moments of beauty. And who doesn't like a refreshing spring season?
