<< SUSTAINABILITY AND THE FRUITION OF THE WORLD TO COME >>
Sustainability is the property of biological systems to remain diverse and productive indefinitely. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. Sustainability involves the endurance and reproductive health of systems and processes. The organizing principle for sustainability is sustainable development, which includes the four interconnected domains of ecology, economics, politics and culture. Sustainability science is the study of sustainable development and environmental science.
Sustainability can also be defined as a socio-ecological process characterized by the pursuit of a common ideal. We struggle collectively to define that common ideal, but it would likely include healthy ecosystems and environments necessary to the survival of humans and other organisms. Ways of reducing negative human impact are collective visioning and agreement, proper and adaptable environmental resources management, and holistic environmental protection. Ecological economics, green chemistry, and conservation biology are some of the forefront fields of academic research to try to transition us into a 21st century (or 3rd millennia) world for all.
Sustainability is a SOCIAL/CULTURAL CHALLENGE that entails international and national law, urban planning, transportation, lifestyles and ethical consumerism. This can be done by reorganizing living conditions (sustainable cities), revaluing economic sectors (ecological systems, green buildings and transport, and sustainable agriculture), using science / new technologies (renewable energy, fission/fusion power or other innovations), and overall designing systems in a flexible and reversible manner which prioritizes natural resources and biological diversity.
As we’ve rushed forward with imbalanced and undisciplined development based around false models riddled with excuses, exemptions, and exploitation; sustainability requires of us that we more completely and honestly assess our impact on the entirety of systems which support us and preserve us. Without proper valuation of the air, water, land, biodiversity and cultural diversity that form the foundation and enrichment of our existence, we shall certainly fulfill the dark visions of a world sucked into degradation and infirmity. As our population becomes both larger and more connected, efficient transition is essential for human societies to weather the challenges of implementing true sustainable development before the costs in lost human potential and suffering become too great.
Thanks for promoting positive discussion and alternatives on Steemit.com, and I look forward to new cultural and techological visions to help implement these essential progressive steps for humanity and all other life on earth.
