GLOBAL WARMING: Venezuela Is Going To Be The First Country To Lose Its Glaciars

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

Venezuela, is a tropical country with a lot of varieties of landscapes. You can see from rainforests, baking savannah and even snow at "Sierra Nevada" mountain range.

Global warming affects all the world without distinction.

Venezuela, used to have 5 glaciars at 1991 which occupied nooks near the peaks of the mountain. Nowadays, only one remains.. at least a part of it.

The last glacier in Venezuela, the Humboldt glacier (located in Merida, at Humboldt Peak), is about to disappear.

Humboldt Peak is Venezuela’s second highest peak, at almost 5.000 meters above sea level. It’s part of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida mountain range. All of Venezuela’s five glaciers were inside this mountain range.

“It is now reduced to an area of ten football pitches, a tenth of its size 30 years ago, it will be gone within a decade or maybe two,” The Economist reports.  Source

Scientists have said how important is to study the glaciar in its last stages. But, the political and economic crisis in Venezuela makes hard for them to study the glaciar in this last stages. This is why nowadays the  study of the glaciar is being done via remote sensing and satellites.

If they could study the glaciar here, it would help scientists to understand how weather influences the melting of tropical glaciers.

Sadly, this is a tragedy that should be highlighted as anothe consequence of the irresponsible behavior on contamination at the huge countries and economies.

The lost of Humboldt glaciar will afect the water cycle and water availability will also be strongly affected.

However, it’s not clear how water availability will be affected without this glaciar. Having access to more data could help scientist to protect many declining glaciers, but due Venezuela's situation, scientists will have to rely on remote data.
