I watched as a yellow jacket flew into a spiders web.

The more it struggled, the more it became entangled.

The spider watched from the corner of her web. She waited.

The yellow jacket began to struggle less and less as it tired. Finally, it stopped its struggle for a moment.

In that moment, the spider raced from it's perch and dashed straight for the yellow jackets legs. In a split second, it spun around the yellow jackets legs and...hog tied it. The yellow jackets legs were immediately immobilized with sticky web.

The spider then jumped on the bees back. The bee began to struggle violently. The spider reared up on it's back legs while balancing on a single thread, and then, it sank it's fangs deep into the yellow jacket.

As the bee began to succumb to the spiders venom, the spider looped around it, wrapping it in more sticky web.

Finally, the yellow jacket stopped moving altogether. The spider, with great effort, then dragged it back to it's perch, and drained it dry of its vital fluids.

The time between the yellow jacket flying into the web and the spider devouring it? Just under 6 minutes.

Just goes to show, one minute you're on top, the next... you're food for a spider.

Harsh world of the bug. I'm so glad they aren't 55 pounds and running all about. We'd be in trouble. Great views and story. Thanks for the corner of nature we seldom see, but know it out there. Cheers.

Wow! Moral of the event : "Never Look Down On Anyone" In terms of war : "Never underestimate an enemy"

Nice story. I don't want to be food for a spider either. But your macro photos are great. Thanks for sharing.

Wow that's awesome, that spider kicked ass on the wasp!!

It was something to see. I would have bet on the bee in the beginning. It wasn't even close. Spider all the way...

That camera is really doing a good job, those are awesome pics. The yellow jackets do get pretty uppity around this time of year for some reason, it's hard to feel sorry for the thing.
