Guide to living off-grid.

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

Hello ladies and gents.Today's post is about what it would take to make that change from living in the city to living off-grid or having a place to escape to on the weekends. Here is a list of utilities that would make the transition to living outside the city a pleasurable experience.

1.Electricity

The first thing to consider when living off-grid is how to power up all your devices like laptop, phones and everything pluggable. Getting a main source of energy like a solar electricity generator and a backup generator such as a Turbine windpower generator is a good idea particularly when the sun isn't able to fully charge the solar battery cells.

2.Water

Having a goodly supply of potable drinking water and sufficient amounts of water to meet the daily requirements of life from cooking to laundry use.
There is a multitude of ways to top up your water reserves from fetching water off the river, drawing water from the well, installing borehole water pumps and my personal favorite a machine that converts air to water.

Whichever one you choose make sure the water is well treated to avoid water-borne diseases. It also helps to have one or more water storage tanks.

3.Kitchen

Having the right kitchen equipment for living off the grid can save you a lot of valuable time and money .

b. Composting toilets

An indoor farm has been proven to yield more farm produce than the traditional outdoor farms according to sciencealert.com .This is due to the optimal environment conducive for the growth of plants and to ensure ample harvests.

6.Poultry farm

If you love all delicacies made from chicken, having a poultry farm is a good idea. There are many benefits you get from owning a poultry farm

a.having access to regular supply of fresh eggs which tastes much better than days old eggs

b.With GMs(Genetically modified) poultry populating the market, having a much healthier natural poultry farm benefits you greatly

c.Could be a good source of income.

7.Means of transportation

Unless you have a horse, there is an even more fun way of exploring the landscape. If you guessed ATVs(All terrain vehicle) you are totally right. Atvs was built for the sole purpose of navigating through rough and rugged terrains inaccessible to conventional modes of transports.

8.Toolbox and some must have equipments

If you are committed to living off grid, its essential you become a DIY(Do it yourself) kind of guy. Here are a list of must have tools that will make any work a lot less labour intensive:
Allen wrench
Axe
Combination wrench
Chain saw to clear brush and tree
Chisel
Crowbar
Digger,
Duct tape
Hammer and nails
Handgloves
Ladder
Machete
Pliers
Rope
Screwdriver and screws
Shovel
Spade
Staple Gun
Safety Glasses
Socket wrench set
Table Saw

9.First aid kit and Emergency procedures

It is good sense to have a complete and functional first aid kit in close proximity for those times when it would be required.
It also makes sense to plan before hand how to contact and transport any person with life threatening injuries to a qualified primary healthcare facility.
Another thing to plan for is the possibility of a fire outbreak placing fire extinguishers in strategic places can save both lives and valuable properties

10.Security of lives and property.

Before acquiring the land you intend to live in. You should do your due diligence to familiarize yourself with the history of the place, the animals(wild) native to that land, inquire about the people and their traditions.
You should put up perimeter fence and camera surveillance system and also getting well-trained guard dog/s

Additionally obtaining a firearms permit to carry a rifle for self and family defense is equally important in the unpleasant situation your home is invaded by unsavory elements intent on causing harm to yourself and your loved ones.

This is one of the most important topics out there.

People can rant and rave about abstract or esoteric threats, but what about self-sustainability?

Good stuff. There should be more of it.

Thanks @shayne. We are so used to the government providing everything for us that we forget that God forbid the government fails we would all be stranded.
